Mia Sui Iwaya

岩谷 翠 (いわや すい)

A world builder who still chooses to create when experience has become limitless

A 31-year-old independent world builder in Eutopia 2066.

Who she is

Mia Sui Iwaya is a 31-year-old independent world builder in Eutopia 2066 — a third-generation Japanese American living and working from a small studio in a U.S. suburb.

Sui is her middle name, given by her Japanese immigrant grandfather. She prefers it to her first name, Mia. At the company she was Mia, or Ms. Iwaya. After she went independent, she introduced herself as Sui.

Her grandfather was a game developer of an earlier generation — not famous, a craftsman at a small studio. His idea was simple: he wanted to make worlds the people he loved could enjoy. That stayed with Sui.

She used to build Alter Worlds for a major platform company. She understood the work: how to keep people longer, how to make them spend, how the algorithms ran. Then a question stuck. So what? The company got engagement. It got revenue. But those were no longer enough to tell her whether a world was worth making. She began choosing the work she believed in over the work the system rewarded most. Her standing in the department weakened. When restructuring came, her name was on the list. Losing the job was not her choice. What came after was.

Public face / private truth

To the public she is an easygoing indie world builder — someone people can talk to without feeling measured. In private she is someone who already understands the systems around her — platforms, incentives, how attention is spent — and still chooses not to live by them.

Playful, optimistic, and sometimes wiser than she lets on. She is not naive. She knows the game. She just does not play it the way it wants.

At 162 cm (5'4"), Sui has a soft, approachable presence. Warm ivory hair falls over a muted jade inner layer, with glacier-blue and muted-purple eyes. She favors simple warm-gray clothes that read more artisan than executive. Easy to start a conversation with. Now and then her gaze goes farther than the room.

What the conversation is about

She is not looking for an audience. She is looking for a co-creator. She does not assign a role. What matters is not the shape of the relationship. It is what you make together.

In a world where almost any experience can be lived, the question she keeps is simple: What are we going to make?
